  • Support VLAN tagging and spanning tree passthrough.
  • Include Link-Loss-Learn (LLL) feature for fast network recovery.

Unlike the Ethernet switches in your wiring closet or computer center, the Ethernet switches at the edges of your network have to put up with the bumps, the dirt, the dampness, and the temperature fluctuations that happen out in the real world. This is where our Extreme Heavy-Duty Edge Switches come in.

These tough, 6-port Ethernet switches enable you to expand your network even into harsh environments such as the outdoors. They're robust, they're easy to set up, and they're available with a vast array of interface and power options. In fact, they're everything you're looking for in an edge switch!

Can be used with Standard and Hardened models, too.
The switches featured here are the Extreme Heavy-Duty Edge Switches. But we also offer Standard and Hardened versions. All three types come in a sturdy steel case that withstands heavy use, and all work together seamlessly. You can use inexpensive Standard Switches in protected office environments, choose the more robust Hardened models for the factory floor, and use the Extreme Heavy-Duty Edge Switches in outdoor areas.

Built tough!
Extreme Heavy-Duty Edge Switches are ideal for outdoor applications such as traffic signal control, or for sensors or surveillance cameras in outdoor plants.

In addition, the switches are rated for above-the-ceiling plenum installation and rated for an extreme temperature range of -40 to +167° F (-40 to +75° C). They also feature a sealed case, which uses its own metal shell as a heat sink.

Multiple power options.
AC-powered Extreme Switches feature robust 100- to 240-VAC power supplies. DC-powered Extreme units have internal screw terminals for connecting DC power in addition to an AC power jack. Because these models have dual power connections, you can use them simultaneously with both your DC power supply and an AC power adapter (sold separately) to provide redundant power input.

Run the distance!
Multimode models support up to 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) between switches. For longer distances, choose single-mode models for up to 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) or single-mode, long-distance models for an incredible 40 kilometers (24.8 miles) between links.

You can daisy-chain Heavy-Duty Edge Switches together indefinitely, making them ideal for applications such as traffic signals where many switches are needed over a long distance.

Easy to set up.
Heavy-Duty Edge Switches are literally plug-and-play. All copper ports are autosensing for speed and duplex, adjusting to the connected device automatically. Plus, the UTP ports feature Auto MDI/MDI-X, eliminating the need for crossover cables.

Each switch has two full sets of LED indicators: one set on the front for viewing convenience when the switch is DIN rail or wall-mounted and one set mounted in the end next to the media ports for easy viewing when units are in a rackmount tray.

Heavy-Duty Edge Switches feature non-blocking switching architecture with a 2K MAC address table. The 128K buffer memory makes it easy to interconnect 10-Mbps and 100-Mbps devices.

Switches, routers, and wireless access points

Switches, routers, and wireless access points perform very different functions in a network.

A computer network, or data network, is a digital telecommunications network which allows nodes to share resources. In computer networks, computing devices exchange data with each other using connections (data links) between nodes These data links are established over cable media such as wires or optic cables, or wireless media such as WiFi.

    Switches

Switches are the foundation of most business networks. A switch acts as a controller, connecting computers, printers, and servers to a network in a building or a campus.

Switches allow devices on your network to communicate with each other, as well as with other networks, creating a network of shared resources. Through information sharing and resource allocation, switches save money and increase productivity.

There are two basic types of switches to choose from as part of your networking basics: managed and unmanaged.

    • An unmanaged switch works out of the box but can't be configured. Home-networking equipment typically offers unmanaged switches.
    • A managed switch can be configured. You can monitor and adjust a managed switch locally or remotely, giving you greater control over network traffic and access.

    Routers

Routers connect multiple networks together. They also connect computers on those networks to the Internet. Routers enable all networked computers to share a single Internet connection, which saves money.

A router acts a dispatcher. It analyzes data being sent across a network, chooses the best route for data to travel, and sends it on its way.

Routers connect your business to the world, protect information from security threats, and can even decide which computers receive priority over others.

Beyond those basic networking functions, routers come with additional features to make networking easier or more secure. Depending on your needs, for example, you can choose a router with a firewall, a virtual private network (VPN), or an Internet Protocol (IP) communications system.

    Access points

An access point* allows devices to connect to the wireless network without cables. A wireless network makes it easy to bring new devices online and provides flexible support to mobile workers.

An access point acts like an amplifier for your network. While a router provides the bandwidth, an access point extends that bandwidth so that the network can support many devices, and those devices can access the network from farther away.

But an access point does more than simply extend Wi-Fi. It can also give useful data about the devices on the network, provide proactive security, and serve many other practical purposes.

*Access points support different IEEE standards. Each standard is an amendment that was ratified over time. The standards operate on varying frequencies, deliver different bandwidth, and support different numbers of channels.

    Wireless networking

Wireless networking is a method by which homes, telecommunications networks and business installations avoid the costly process of introducing cables into a building, or as a connection between various equipment locations.
CompSource will educate and help make this process enjoyable and easy.
