General Information: | |
This 8-port SATA III (6Gbps) controller enables you to add eight SATA 6Gbps hard drives (HDDs) or solid State Drives (SSDs) to your computer system or server via an available PCIe x4 card slot. The card supports SATA III and PCI-Express Gen 2 Specifications and four SATA controllers to deliver a high-performance data storage solution. Quad Controllers to Deliver 8-Port SATA 6Gbps Performance Featuring four 2-Port SATA 6Gbps controllers and a PCIe-x4 MUX, this SATA card enables the connection of eight high-performance SATA 6Gbps drives with a combined total throughput of up to 20Gbps. The SATA drives are connected via two Mini-SAS ports with two included Mini-SAS to 4x-SATA adapter cables. To ensure a secure connection, each SATA port on the included cables features a locking connector, that will prevent the drive from accidental disconnection when working inside your computer case. Wide Compatibility The PCIe MUX that's built into this controller card manages the downstream controllers, which improves motherboard compatibility by ensuring the card will work with motherboards that support bifurcation and motherboards that do not. To further improve motherboard compatibility the card does not have a built-in RAID controller, but fully supports the use of software RAID. Plus, with supports for PCIe Gen 2 and SATA III Specifications this card ensures backward compatibility with previous generations (SATA I/II, PCIe Gen 1) at lower performance. The controller card is widely supported across all popular operating system platforms including Windows (XP,Vista,7,8,10), macOS (10.6.8 and above) and Linux (2.6.32 and above). Hassle-Free Installation The SATA controller card features plug-and-play installation and can be installed in full-profile and low-profile computer systems with a full-profile bracket preinstalled, and an interchangeable low-profile (half-height) bracket included. The card also supports storage software data management systems such as Storage Spaces (Microsoft) , RAID Assistant (MacOS) and mdraid/mdadm (Linux), for hassle-free setup, partitioning and software RAID array building. 8P6G-PCIE-SATA-CARD is backed by a StarTech.com 2-year warranty and free lifetime 24/5 North American based, multi-lingual support. | |

Startech's story;
StarTech.com was founded in 1985 by Paul Seed and Ken Kalopsis. Paul and Ken met while attending the University of Western Ontario, in London, Ontario in the early eighties. Originally known as StarTech Computer Accessories, the company had very humble beginnings as a "Visa Card" founded operation, manufacturing products such as computer dust covers in the basement of a house.
The company has grown to become a global manufacturer of over 3000 products with operations in five continents but one thing hasn't changed: Startechs commitment to making our customers' jobs easier.

Learn more about SCSI/RAID Controllers
What is a RAID controller?
A RAID (redundant array of independent disks) combines multiple physical drives into one virtual storage device that offers more storage and, in most cases, fault tolerance so that data can be recovered even if one of the physical disks fails. A RAID controller is a hardware device or software program used to manage hard disk drives (HDDs) or solid-state drives (SSDs) in a computer or storage array so they work as a logical unit.A controller offers a level of abstraction between an operating system and the physical drives. A RAID controller presents groups to applications and operating systems as logical units for which data protection schemes can be defined. Because the controller has the ability to access multiple copies of data on multiple physical devices, it has the ability to improve performance and protect data in the event of a system crash. There are different levels of raid as well, typically the higher the number, the more redundancy your data will have. In some cases 1-2 hard drives can go down before you will be impacted! Another caveat with RAID is the ability to actually speed up your hard drive performance. The more drives you have in your array the more redundant and faster your I/O will become!
In hardware-based RAID, a physical controller is used to manage the RAID array. The controller can take the form of a PCI or PCI Express (PCIe) card, which is designed to support a specific drive format such as SATA or SCSI. (Some RAID controllers can also be integrated with the motherboard.) A RAID controller may also be software-only, using the hardware resources of the host system. Software-based RAID generally provides similar functionality to hardware-based RAID, but its performance is typically less than that of the hardware versions.
