General Information:

The 12Gb/s Microsemi Adaptec 82885T SAS expander card offers a scalable connectivity / fan-out option for additional drives when used in conjunction with a SAS RAID adapter or SAS HBA. The 82885T SAS Expander Card offers 36 ports in a low-profile MD2 form factor with up to 20 internal ports for direct attach drive connectivity, 4 or 8, internal ports for connectivity to a RAID adapter or HBA, and 8 external ports for external storage expansion.

Flexibility of Configuration
The 82885T mounts internally to any available PCIe slot, away from the backplane, and features mini-SAS HD connectors out the top for added cabling flexibility in dense server environments. The 82885T enables a low cost drive expansion solution when mated with a RAID adapter or HBA. The expander draws power from the PCIe slot (requires 4 or more lanes), but there is no data transfer to the slot. Alternatively, power can also be supplied to the expander card through a standard 4-pin auxiliary power connector.

Enclosure Management Support
The 82885T supports SGPIO and SES2 enclosure management, allowing enclosure information to be routed from all daisy-chained 82885T cards to the HBA or RAID adapter. All device and slot mapping information is provided to the HBA or RAID adapter by the last 82885T card in the chain.

Universal Compatibility with Existing Storage Infrastructure
The 82885T is fully compatible with Microsemi Adaptec Series 8, Series 7 and Series 6 12Gb/s and 6Gb/s RAID adapters and HBAs, allowing for a seamless integration and management within an end-to-end Microsemi Adaptec solution. The 82885T is also compatible with 3rd party adapters and HBAs and has also been tested for interoperability with a wide variety of SAS and SATA HDDs and SSDs.

    Learn more about SCSI/RAID Controllers

    What is a RAID controller?

A RAID (redundant array of independent disks) combines multiple physical drives into one virtual storage device that offers more storage and, in most cases, fault tolerance so that data can be recovered even if one of the physical disks fails. A RAID controller is a hardware device or software program used to manage hard disk drives (HDDs) or solid-state drives (SSDs) in a computer or storage array so they work as a logical unit.

A controller offers a level of abstraction between an operating system and the physical drives. A RAID controller presents groups to applications and operating systems as logical units for which data protection schemes can be defined. Because the controller has the ability to access multiple copies of data on multiple physical devices, it has the ability to improve performance and protect data in the event of a system crash. There are different levels of raid as well, typically the higher the number, the more redundancy your data will have. In some cases 1-2 hard drives can go down before you will be impacted! Another caveat with RAID is the ability to actually speed up your hard drive performance. The more drives you have in your array the more redundant and faster your I/O will become!

In hardware-based RAID, a physical controller is used to manage the RAID array. The controller can take the form of a PCI or PCI Express (PCIe) card, which is designed to support a specific drive format such as SATA or SCSI. (Some RAID controllers can also be integrated with the motherboard.) A RAID controller may also be software-only, using the hardware resources of the host system. Software-based RAID generally provides similar functionality to hardware-based RAID, but its performance is typically less than that of the hardware versions.
