Our premium Industrial Opto-Isolated Serial to Fiber Multimode ST Converter is the ideal choice if you need reliable serial data extensions in heavy-industry areas.

Meets stringent IEC and IEEE specs.
Encased in an IP30-rated enclosure, the converter's been put through some of the most exacting tests in the industry. The high-grade converter meets the requirements of two standards that make it suitable for electrical substation installations - IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 - specifications that are more stringent than NEMA TS1/TS2 requirements for transportation applications.

Plus, as a fiber-based conversion and extension device, it's inherently immune to electromagnetic and radio-frequency interference (EMI/RFI) as it uses the optical cable to extend RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 serial data as far as 2 kilometers (1.2 m.).

Three levels of isolation.
The Industrial Opto-Isolated Serial to Fiber Multimode ST Converter provides powerful isolation. Featuring 2-kV triple isolation, the device protects equipment as well as data from damaging surges and ground loops. With isolation on the converter's power supply circuits, you're given a third degree of protection for your expensive components.

This level of protection helps prevent rogue currents from disrupting important data communications, such as those in the factory, engineering, military, defense industry, or utility applications.

By isolating voltage anomalies, you stand a much better chance of preventing a surge from shutting down an assembly line - or your entire plant.

Use in point-to-point or multipoint applications.
You'll need two units for a standard point-to-point application. But you can also easily set up a multidrop configuration so one serial device talks to multiple slave devices around a fiber ring.

Used in a fiber ring type of application, one Industrial Opto-Isolated Serial to Fiber Multimode ST Converter can communicate with up to 31 other converters in a ring.

The converter has a removable terminal block for both RS-422/RS-485 and power connections, and it supports serial Modbus® connections for both ASCII or RTU (remote terminal unit) formats.

Simple to configure and set up.
DIP switches enable you to configure the converter for a multidrop or point-to-point operation, and a serial mode switch enables you to choose RS-232 or RS-422/RS-485 modes.

For additional ease of setup, bit-wise enabled circuitry detects the data rate automatically without you having to set a DIP switch. An automatic send data control feature enables an RS-485 serial port to be used in Windows® applications where you have no control over the handshake lines.

In addition, the Industrial Opto-Isolated Serial to Fiber Multimode ST Converter has built-in switchable bias resistors (1.2 kilohms) on transmit and receive ports, as well as switchable termination (120 ohms).

    Learn more about Transceivers/Media Converters

Switches, routers, and wireless access points

Switches, routers, and wireless access points perform very different functions in a network.

A computer network, or data network, is a digital telecommunications network which allows nodes to share resources. In computer networks, computing devices exchange data with each other using connections (data links) between nodes These data links are established over cable media such as wires or optic cables, or wireless media such as WiFi.

    Switches

Switches are the foundation of most business networks. A switch acts as a controller, connecting computers, printers, and servers to a network in a building or a campus.

Switches allow devices on your network to communicate with each other, as well as with other networks, creating a network of shared resources. Through information sharing and resource allocation, switches save money and increase productivity.

There are two basic types of switches to choose from as part of your networking basics: managed and unmanaged.

    • An unmanaged switch works out of the box but can't be configured. Home-networking equipment typically offers unmanaged switches.
    • A managed switch can be configured. You can monitor and adjust a managed switch locally or remotely, giving you greater control over network traffic and access.

    Routers

Routers connect multiple networks together. They also connect computers on those networks to the Internet. Routers enable all networked computers to share a single Internet connection, which saves money.

A router acts a dispatcher. It analyzes data being sent across a network, chooses the best route for data to travel, and sends it on its way.

Routers connect your business to the world, protect information from security threats, and can even decide which computers receive priority over others.

Beyond those basic networking functions, routers come with additional features to make networking easier or more secure. Depending on your needs, for example, you can choose a router with a firewall, a virtual private network (VPN), or an Internet Protocol (IP) communications system.

    Access points

An access point* allows devices to connect to the wireless network without cables. A wireless network makes it easy to bring new devices online and provides flexible support to mobile workers.

An access point acts like an amplifier for your network. While a router provides the bandwidth, an access point extends that bandwidth so that the network can support many devices, and those devices can access the network from farther away.

But an access point does more than simply extend Wi-Fi. It can also give useful data about the devices on the network, provide proactive security, and serve many other practical purposes.

*Access points support different IEEE standards. Each standard is an amendment that was ratified over time. The standards operate on varying frequencies, deliver different bandwidth, and support different numbers of channels.

    Wireless networking

Wireless networking is a method by which homes, telecommunications networks and business installations avoid the costly process of introducing cables into a building, or as a connection between various equipment locations.

Thanks Jordan for the reply, and going well beyond anything I would expect from a company helping it's customers. Most company employees would have simply looked at their catalog and said "if it's not here in our catalog we don't have it" So to say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement, as a matter of fact I think the way you personally handled my inquiry is a great example of what customer service should be about, and will be using this example at my next meeting with my employees. Keep up the good work, Compsource is very fortunate to have you on their team. Sincerely, Don / President Beauty and Health Institute Don Kruse
